The roaming subdirectory worked. C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook
WCS
Fantastic... able to fix a problem that has stumped the IT dept for weeks... (Deleted the Roaming Directory)
Thanks a lot! Renaming the outlook.xml file to something else has fixed my problem of outlook not starting because of invalid XML error.

As noted by someone else, on Vista/Windows 2008 (and probably Windows 7) it is located at:
C:\Users\{username}Microsoft\Outlook
NOTE: Replace {username}
sure sign is an Outlook.xml of 0 kb.I deleted it and was back in Outlook.
Thansk again!
However the "Outlook.xml" was not 0, this was not working for me perfectly.
Cheers!
Finally!! my "outlook.xml" in that files was 3kb and I took the chances, deleted it and Outlook opens for me!!
Start/run:
outlook.exe
That fixed mine! Thanks.
The /resetnavpane did the trick for me! Thanks alot, guys!
The Run command is what definitely worked.
This is the issue. I have Windows 7 and Outlook 2007.
Start
Run
Type 'resetnavpane
Hit Enter
This is the solution without a doubt.
I had the cannot start outlook, invalid XML error after my Windows XP PC crashed.
I deleted the Outlook.xml file from C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.
This fixes the problem and outlook.xml is recreated when you start outlook.

I work at MS Outlook every day. To my mind I know this tool quite well. But one day before yesterday I was astonished, because of all my emails had been lost. I didn't know what to do next. By sheer chance a friend called me up and advised - outlook 2003 cannot view my sent items folder. It turned out the utility was very good and resolved my issue for a minutes and without money. Moreover the software helped my brother too. He thanked me a lot.
tray this outlook.exe /resetnavpane
worked for me..
Same message. Same problem after battery back-up failed. Came back from vacation and couldn't even open Outlook! Scared me to death!
I tried the outlook.exe / resetnavpane and it worked like a charm!
Now sure how but I am SO THANKFUL you guys! Thanks Shashi!
Thank you - Thank you - Thank you!!!!!
The roaming subdirectory worked. Just rename the xml and Office data file to something else. I presume you could delete also. I had not seen the "outlook.exe /resetnavpane" or I would have tried that first.
Dear Microsoft Technicians,
I am having the invalid XML problem with my mircrosoft outlook. Can anyone please assist me on fixing this problem?
I tried all the 6 methods posted here. None works.
Appreciate if anyone could please enlighten me.
Regards,
Alan
Locate your outlook.xml file in following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
Cut and paste it to windows front page
Restart outlook.
It worked with me and is very simple indeed.
